Cumbria is the second-largest County in England and one of the most rural. Its coastal towns are bordered by The Irish Sea and to the east by the Pennines. Almost 20% of Cumbria’s population are over the age of 65 years.
Live-in Care as provided by Able Community Care means that an older or disabled person will have an experienced care worker living in their home for a fortnight at a time providing domestic care, personal care and companionship. After living with different care workers for a fortnight, our clients choose the carers they would like to have return and thus a rotational system of ongoing support is established. Our Live-in Carers all have a minimum of one year’s professional experience. They will all have an up to date DBS (Formerly Criminal Record Check) and will continually update their care training. Many of our Live-in Carers have been with us for more than ten years.
For many people, the opportunity to have someone with them enables them to pick up the social aspects of their life again. On a nice day, a trip out to a cafe or a garden centre, on a Sunday perhaps to attend church, any afternoon the opportunity to have a friend round with someone else to bake the cake and make the tea. For relatives and friends, the knowledge that an experienced carer is in the home provides a feeling of safety and security for their loved ones.

Emily is one of the clients we care for. Last year, in her nineties, a relative with whom she lived, passed away. Not wishing to leave her home of many years, but with a diagnosis of early-onset dementia, Emily could not remain in her home alone. Able Community Care was asked to provide a Live-in Care Package and this has been continuous since the first carer moved into Emily’s home. Regular carers now return to support her with her domestic care, personal care supervision and by providing companionship. In addition to providing our Live-in Care services around the County we are also able to provide Home from Hospital Care, Respite Care and can accompany Cumbrian people who need care on holidays of their choice.
